Understanding Colorado Homeschooling Laws

Colorado offers families three legal options for homeschooling. Each pathway has different requirements, so you can choose the one that best fits your family’s needs.

Here’s a quick overview of the three legal homeschooling options in Colorado:

This option requires you to submit a written Notice of Intent to a Colorado school district at least 14 days before starting your homeschool program.

Under Colorado’s Non-Public School Law, you can enroll your child in a Colorado-based independent school, such as Wet Mountian School, often referred to as an umbrella school—and follow that school’s guidelines.
You are not required to file a Notice of Intent with a public school district when choosing this option.

If you hold a valid Colorado teaching license, you may homeschool your child under that certification.
No reporting or testing requirements apply when this option is used, per [CRS 22-33-104 (2)(b)(i)(I)].
