Participation in Enrichment Programs and Extracurricular Activities

Students enrolled in Wet Mountain School often participate successfully in publicly funded enrichment programs, including sports and other extracurricular activities. Because Wet Mountain School is a privately funded umbrella school, and Colorado law permits enrollment in only one publicly funded program at a time, this arrangement typically does not create any conflicts.

Under Colorado law, students enrolled in private schools and homeschool programs have equal rights to participate in extracurricular activities offered by public schools. Students may join programs at any public school within their district of attendance or residence. If a specific activity—such as a sport or club—is not available within their district, they may participate in a nearby district that does offer it.

Typically, students must choose a single school for all sports participation. However, exceptions are sometimes made. For example, if only one school in the district offers a swim team, your child may be allowed to compete for that school while participating in other sports at their local school.

We recommend contacting your local school district to confirm current policies and procedures, as they may vary.

Occasionally, a school or district may mistakenly assume your child is homeschooling under Colorado’s homeschool statute and request a Notice of Intent (NOI). In this case, you should submit your Wet Mountain School Statement of Enrollment instead, which confirms that your child is enrolled in a private umbrella school and meets legal requirements.

Please note that not all schools and districts are familiar with umbrella schools. As a result, some may continue to request an NOI even when it is not required. We encourage you to reach out directly to the program or school to confirm your child’s eligibility and clarify their enrollment status.

If you encounter any challenges or need help communicating with a school or district, Wet Mountain School is here to support you.
