Enrichment Program Participation and Publicly Funded Programs
Many students enrolled at Wet Mountain School successfully take part in publicly funded enrichment programs, including athletics, without issue. Because umbrella schools like Wet Mountain School are privately funded, and students may only enroll in one publicly funded program at a time, participation typically does not create a conflict.
Under Colorado law, students enrolled in private schools or homeschooling programs have the same rights to participate in extracurricular activities. They may join activities offered by any public school within their district of attendance or residence. If a specific activity—such as a sport or club—is not available within the home district, students may participate in a neighboring district where the activity is offered.
Generally, students are required to participate in all sports at a single school. However, exceptions can apply. For instance, if your child wishes to swim but only one school in the district has a pool, they may be permitted to swim for that school while participating in other sports at a different school.
We strongly recommend checking with your local school district for current policies and procedures, as they may vary.
In some cases, a school district may mistakenly assume that your child is homeschooling under Colorado’s homeschool statute and request a Notice of Intent (NOI). If this occurs, you can provide your Wet Mountain School Statement of Enrollment instead, which confirms your child’s enrollment in a private umbrella school.
Please note that not all districts are familiar with umbrella schools. Some may still require an NOI despite private school enrollment. We encourage you to reach out directly to the program or school in question to confirm eligibility for participation.
If you run into any difficulties or need help communicating with a school or district, Wet Mountain School is here to support you every step of the way.
